Overcoming all Obstacles

Congratulations to our client Cynthia Baker who is returning home to Birchy Bay after 10 months of recovering from a car accident. Following her accident, Cynthia was told she would never walk again. After 6 months in the hospital and 3 months of therapy at NL Balance & Dizziness Centre, Cynthia is now walking on her own and happy to be returning to her own home to spend time with her new grandson, family, and friends.

Cynthia and part of our team at NLBDC- Alex, Kathryn, and Kim.

Just wanted to send Kim and Jake a special thank you note for working with me through my meniere’s issues, or should I say medication issues.

The encouragement and support from you both got me through a very dark period. I am functioning much better with continual improvement from your VRT regiment. What you guys did was rebuild my confidence by explaining what was happening, why it was happening, and helped me regain control.

I have had severe back and muscular pain for several years and these issues have become much worse over the last couple of years. This pain has resulted in two visits to emergency and almost total incapacitation. Visits to physiotherapy helped my mobility issues but the balance issues still remained.
Friends suggested that I try NL Balance & Dizziness Centre and to date, it appears to be the best move yet. After less than three months, myself and my husband have noted a significant improvement in my balance, strength, and endurance. This is a result of the program prepared by Kim and her crew. The program increased my confidence and self assurance to the point that I actually enjoy doing the exercises which are improving my quality of life. I shall continue with this program because as long as I persist, I shall improve. Thank you Kim and company.

I would like to take a moment to share some of my experiences at NL Balance and Dizziness Center: All staff are extremely considerate and empathetic to your situation, and Adrienne Thoms, my occupational therapist, has impressed me beyond any reasonable measure.
Folks, she is the answer to getting yourself and your confusing situation organized. Her patience is the productive force you need to feel in your corner. Positivity is not as contagious as negativity, however I challenge ANYONE to be proud enough to ask Adrienne for help. You will set yourself up for success. There is no other option- you define success and she will bring your wishes to fruition.
— David B, CONCUSSION PATIENT
I was referred to NL Balance & Dizziness Centre after my second concussion. Because of the concussion, I was experiencing confusion, pain, disorientation, and intense sensitivity to light and sound. From the first phone call, Sandy was reassuring, kind, and incredibly patient, which was foreshadowing for all of my experiences at the clinic. Alex’s knowledge and skill are matched by his sense of humour and candour. Both Alex and Kim immediately (and continuously) made me feel at ease during a time when it quite literally felt like the world around me was spinning. Every member of the team has been patient, friendly, respectful, and accommodating. I’m so grateful for all of the help and care I’ve received, and definitely recommend them to anyone who needs help in their scope of practice.

I developed a balance disorder in 2011. The cause was never clearly established. The problem would vary in severity but never go away entirely. At times, I had difficulty walking because of concerns about falling and my previously active lifestyle was compromised, sometimes greatly. Repeated testing did not reveal the cause for my problem. In June, 2019, I was referred to the Newfoundland Balance and Dizziness Centre and assessed by physiotherapist Kim Furlong who started me on balance exercises combined with visual training maneuvers which I have continued every day. I have had a marked improvement to the point that I can now move about with much more confidence and a feeling of greater stability. I have become more active again and am eager to plan more travel experiences without much fear of having to cancel. It is my opinion that I am very fortunate that my city has a clinic with such expertise along with an excellent caring attitude.
— Dr. Grenfell Adams, VESTIBULAR PATIENT
Six and a half months ago I was very sick with vertigo caused by microscopic crystals. Then my ENT specialist recommended I contact Kim Furlong at the Balance and Dizziness Centre on Elizabeth Avenue. I am glad I took that advice. I hesitate to think where I would be today had I not acted on the recommendation of the ENT specialist. Honestly, I did not think Kim would be able to help me and I did not expect to ever get better.
I am so happy to report that I am back to my old self. If you are having balance or dizziness issues I highly recommend making an appointment. I want to thank Kim and Jake so much for everything they did for me. I want to thank the staff. They are so kind and helpful and will always do their best to get you an appointment when you really need it. So, thank you again Kim and staff at NL Balance and Dizziness Centre.
— THERESA MT PEARL, VESTIBULAR PATIENT
Had balance issues for at least two years or more which necessitated my giving up alpine skiing, biking and other activities requiring good balance. Had been told on numerous occasions by people that should have known the difference that there was nothing that could be done for it. Went to the NL Balance and Dizziness Centre in April and Kim did a complete assessment and then performed the Epley maneuver which repositioned my inner ear crystals. Problem solved! Highly recommend this place to anyone having balance/Dizziness issues. Very professional and knowledgeable. Thank you Kim!!

A big thanks goes out to Kevin today . . . For the first time in months I felt so proud of my accomplishment . . . For the first time in a long time I had the confidence to achieve a small goal just to be able to walk outside without the fear of losing my balance and falling . . . Keep up the awesome work you do!!
— K. Duhart (Balance Patient)
So glad my doctor recommended I see physiotherapist Kevin Parfrey. Kevin has performed dry needling on some chronically tight and sore areas and I’ve experienced excellent results. He’s provided me with some great rehab exercises as well. Would highly recommend this clinic.
